So, yesterday, the Nairobi edition of demonstrations and today’s Mombasa demonstrations against the Finance Bill 2024 in Kenya happened.
This has been one of the most interesting demonstrations of my adult existence. One, because it was led by Gen Z. Two, it was not called for by the opposition but by digital activists. Third, it confirms that what I have been reading from Nanjala Nyabola on digital activism in Kenya is true.
But,
This is not just a study of online activism for me. It is a study of how the general public in Kenya has enough information to reject the Finance Bill that is going to affect our future. It is seeing my younger siblings and the younger generation take over the mantle of activism in Kenya. It is the songs of freedom that ring in my head each time I watch a TikTok video on ending the finance bill.
